Histoire d’un soir: youth and escapism in 1980s French pop

If there is one theme that strikes me about 80s French pop, it is the idea of the escape. Whether it’s escape from heartbreak or from the banalities of everyday life, much of the music of this time speaks to a desire to get away. Escape may be sought on a night out (La nuit; Histoire d’un soir (Bye bye les galères)), in a person (Partenaire Particulier), or by physically travelling to a different place (Week-end à Rome).

This playlist is my attempt to make a snapshot, from one place and time, into the universal promise to youth of the possibility to escape one’s sorrows, if only for one night.
